We invite applications and nominations for a senior scholar to lead the Department of Curriculum & Instruction and build on our historical accomplishments and current initiatives related to community and public engagement. The leader will join us in reimagining our role as university actors, catalysts, and social change agents and taking action to build a more just, liberatory, and accountable institution and world. Depending on the alignment of scholarly work and qualifications, the department head position may be combined with a named professorship in Curriculum and Instruction.

The Department comprises 26 internationally and nationally recognized tenure-track and specialized faculty from racially and linguistically diverse backgrounds who are committed to seeking deep interconnections among theory, research, and practice. Research anchors our work at the graduate level, with our intellectual contributions organized into four program areas: 1) Curriculum Research, Early Childhood Education, Aesthetics, and Teacher Education (CREATE); 2) Digital Environments for Learning, Teaching & Agency (DELTA); 3) Language and Literacy (L&L); and 4) Mathematics, Science, and Engineering (MSE). At the undergraduate level, we focus on global and local concerns of pre- and in-service teacher learning, early childhood, elementary, and secondary education, and our faculty contribute significantly to the College’s licensure and non-licensure degree programs.

The College of Education provides strong support for research through the Bureau of Educational Research, and opportunities abound for collaboration within the College as well as campuswide, focused on both school- and community-based learning settings. Faculty in the Department of Curriculum & Instruction are funded by the National Science Foundation, Institute of Education Sciences, and the U. S. Department of Education, among other external agencies and prestigious foundations.

The Department Head has the administrative support of an associate head for graduate programs, program area chairs, and an administrative assistant, and works collaboratively with the College executive leadership team. 

Minimum Qualifications: We seek a nationally known scholar with effective leadership qualities who will support a strong and diverse faculty and continue to recruit and retain diverse students. The Head must possess an earned doctorate in education or a related field and demonstrate a strong record of scholarship and teaching commensurate with the position of full professor. Candidates also must have a record of promoting diversity, equity, access, and inclusion within one or more areas of their research, teaching, public engagement, or service.

Preferred Qualifications:  Evidence of previous administrative experience in higher education and budget oversight is strongly preferred, as is a strong record of acquiring external funding, an understanding of the complexities of P-12 education and teacher education, a commitment to community engagement and building inclusive relationships, and experience with faculty and program development. 

Salary and Starting Date: The budgeted base salary range for the position is $120,000 to $150,000 at the Full Professor level, for a nine-month service basis. As the head of the department, an administrative stipend will be added for a twelve-month service basis. Additional resources are provided for named professors. The pay offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors including (but not limited to) the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate including equivalent years in rank, training, and field or discipline; internal equity; and external market pay for comparable jobs.  The proposed starting date is August 16, 2025.

Position: The Department of Curriculum & Instruction is seeking a faculty member at open rank (assistant, associate or full professor) level in bilingual education. This is a full-time, nine-month, tenure-line or tenured appointment depending on rank at the time of hire.

Position Description: The Department of Curriculum & Instruction possesses a long-standing reputation in the areas of bilingual education and literacy. We seek candidates with expertise in the literacy development and instruction of English learners (preschool-grade 12). Candidates will undertake a program of research that will lead to an outstanding and sustained record of scholarship and external funding. Teaching assignments will include undergraduate and graduate courses in linguistic and cultural diversity and the bilingual/ESL endorsement programs (on-campus, online, or hybrid). Successful candidates also will participate in graduate program development and in the recruitment and training of graduate students.

Qualifications: Earned doctorate in bilingual/ESL education or a related field is required. Candidates at the associate or full professor level must have an established record of research, teaching, and service to meet the University’s requirements for tenure at the appropriate rank. Candidates at the assistant professor level must have an earned doctorate at the time of hire.  Candidates must demonstrate interest in working with children and families from diverse racial, ethnic, and linguistic backgrounds, as well as with children of various academic performance levels. Teaching experience (preschool-grade 12) with English learners and students from diverse populations desired.

Responsibilities: Carry out an active program of research and actively pursue external funding. Develop and teach undergraduate and graduate-level course work related to linguistic and cultural diversity, bilingual and ESL education. Advise and recruit master’s and doctoral students in bilingual education. Contribute to the ongoing development of undergraduate and graduate programs. Provide leadership and service at the national, state, and local level related to bilingual education.

Position: 

The Department of Special Education at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign invites applications for two full-time tenure-track faculty positions in special education with expertise in early childhood special education. 

Position Description: 

We seek candidates at the assistant/associate/full professor rank with expertise in early childhood special education.  These dynamic faculty members will contribute to a rich tradition of conducting influential research; securing external grant funding; teaching undergraduate and graduate courses; mentoring and advising graduate students; and providing university, state, and professional service. Successful candidates must have a strong interest in and commitment to both research and teacher education. Successful candidates at the rank of full professor may be considered for a named professorship.

Required Qualifications

  • A doctorate in special education or a related field (by date of hire) with expertise in one or more of the following areas:
  • Culturally responsive practices in early childhood (birth to age 6)
  • Supports for children birth to 3 with disabilities or delays (e.g., early intervention, Early Head Start, home visiting programs)
  • Family-centered practices for children birth to third grade
  • Workforce development in inclusive early childhood (birth to third grade) settings (e.g., personnel preparation, professional development, leadership practices)
  • For hire at the assistant level, the potential for a line of research with a strong and sustained record of scholarship and the potential for external funding. For hire at the associate/full level, an established line of research with a strong and sustained record of scholarship and external funding.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Evidence of how professional experience in early childhood (e.g., as a teacher, early intervention provider, home visitor, etc.) manifests in ongoing research, teaching, service, and/or public engagement.
  • Examples of effective university teaching.
  • Experience addressing and advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in research, teaching, service, and/or public engagement.
  • Commitment to engaging and effectively collaborating with faculty, staff, and students.

Assistant / Associate / Professor in Evaluation

The Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign announces a new position for an open-rank, tenure-track faculty member in program or policy evaluation with expertise in qualitative and/or mixed methods. The ideal candidate will have an emerging or established track record of published scholarship in evaluation and field experience as an evaluator. We are seeking a scholar who employs social justice approaches in educational and social inquiry (e.g., equity-focused, values-engaged, culturally responsive, decolonizing, and/or Indigenous perspectives). Other areas of interest include but are not limited to candidates who have expertise in (1) evaluation transnationally, cross-culturally, and/or outside of the United States; and (2) evaluation and research using artificial intelligence or other emergent technologies, especially with attention to their relational, ethical, and validity considerations.

Position Responsibilities and Minimum Qualifications: This is a full-time, academic year (9 months salaried over 12 months), tenured or tenure-track position. Candidates must hold an earned doctoral degree in evaluation, educational psychology, social research methodology, or a closely related field. Candidates will be expected to attract and mentor qualified graduate students, teach graduate and undergraduate courses in evaluation and qualitative or mixed methods, and provide meaningful service both within the university and in outside communities. 

All successful candidates will be expected to provide evidence of teaching and mentoring ability. Competitive candidates with previous faculty positions should have experience teaching and mentoring graduate students in research methodologies and/or evaluation. In Educational Psychology at Illinois, our graduate programs reflect an apprenticeship model where students gain considerable experience in conducting evaluations and research through faculty members’ funded projects. At the Associate or Full Professor level, we are interested in a faculty member who has a solid track-record of funded projects to serve this need. At the Assistant level, we look for strong indications of the ability to secure funded projects and co-publish with graduate students.

Position

The Department of Curriculum & Instruction seeks applications for an open-ranked position in science education. This is a full-time, tenure-track, academic year, nine-month position. This faculty member’s primary affiliation would be within the Math, Science, and Engineering (MSE) program area. The MSE program area is one of four program areas in the Department of Curriculum & Instruction: Curriculum Research, Early Childhood Education, Aesthetics & Teacher Education (CREATE); Language & Literacy (L&L); Math, Science, and Engineering (MSE); and Digital Environments for Learning, Teaching, & Agency (DELTA).

The MSE program area focuses on research related to teaching and learning in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). This includes scholarship focused on theories of learning in STEM domains, discourse in STEM classrooms, teacher education and STEM teaching practices, curriculum development, sociopolitical perspectives, and STEM education in informal and out-of-school contexts. MSE faculty are national and international leaders at the forefront of their fields. They prepare cutting-edge scholars who raise and address vital questions about mathematics, science, and engineering education. The MSE faculty support and encourage a wide variety of perspectives and research methodologies.

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction is ranked the 8th best graduate program in Curriculum and Instruction by US News and World Report (2024). We seek an individual who will further this tradition of excellence in research, teaching, and service in the area of science education. The specific area of interest in science education is open but we especially encourage applicants with research interests in the intersection of science education and social-justice, community-engaged scholarship, and science teaching and learning. Teaching Assistant Professor, Trauma-Informed Education

Position Description: The Department of Curriculum & Instruction and Department of Special Education are collaborating to offer an online master’s degree concentration in Trauma-Informed Education. We seek a colleague who will join the College of Education to engage in teaching that will create transformative learning experiences for students and impact society. We seek candidates with expertise in Trauma-Informed Education or a related field. Teaching assignments will primarily include courses in equity-centered trauma-informed education that are required for the Trauma-Informed Education concentration in the online master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction. Additional Curriculum & Instruction and Special Education courses will be assigned based on the candidate’s additional areas of expertise. The additional courses may be face-to-face or online.

Qualifications: An earned PhD in education or a related field is required. Experience in the use of technology for instructional delivery, including online course delivery, is required.

Preferred Experience: We prefer candidates who have the following qualifications: (1) earned doctorate with a research focus in Trauma-Informed Education or related area; (2) teaching experience in PreK-12th grades; (3) significant experience in multicultural and diverse educational settings; (4) demonstrated commitment to teacher education and professional development; (5) prior university teaching experience; (6) expertise in additional content areas (i.e., literacy, math, science, social studies or special education); and (7) experience with Canvas.

Responsibilities: Our new colleague will be expected to (1) develop and teach master’s level courses related to equity-centered, trauma-informed education; (2) contribute to the development of undergraduate programs in Trauma-Informed Education; and (3) teach additional courses in Curriculum and Instruction or Special Education based on the candidate’s areas of expertise, (4) provide service at state and local levels related to trauma-informed education.

Position: The Department of Education Policy, Organization & Leadership is seeking a full-time, on campus Teaching Assistant Professor. This is a full-time, nine-month, non-tenure-track position with an additional summer month appointment, as needed.

Position Description: The Education Policy, Leadership & Organization possesses an outstanding reputation in the area of education policy, interdisciplinary research, and social justice. We seek a colleague who will join our department and College of Education to coordinate and monitor the implementation of the field study placement for our new Sustainability Education online certificate programs. Candidates will also teach Environmental and Sustainability Education related courses.

Required Qualifications:

An earned doctoral degree in education is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Earned doctorate in Sustainability/Environmental Education, Education Policy, Educational Foundations, Global Studies, or a related field.
  • Two years of teaching experience in public schools or comparable non-formal setting
  • Significant experience in community and public engagement.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with diverse populations specifically including Black, Indigenous, Latina/o/x, and Global South communities; and undergraduate educator preparation.
  • Prior university teaching and service experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Administrative duties such as serving as the assessment lead of the Sustainability Education program.
  • Coordinating student placement in global, national, and online settings.
  • Collaboration with the College of Education’s Office of Public Engagement and Office of International Programs.
  • Meetings with program faculty.
  • Mentoring students as needed.
  • The responsibilities also include teaching four Sustainability Education courses and related foundations courses across EPOL concentrations per academic year.
  • Teaching assignments will be consistent with the candidate’s area of expertise within Sustainability/Environmental Education.

Position: We seek a full-time, 9-month specialized faculty member appointed as a Lecturer. This is a promotion-accruing non-tenure track position, renewable contingent upon performance reviews.

Position Description: In the Department of Special Education, specialized faculty with the title of Lecturer are engaged primarily in providing classroom instruction, although they may have ancillary service or administrative duties. These faculty members typically have an apportionment of 80% teaching and 20% service, which includes a teaching load of 4 courses per semester (8 per year). We are particularly interested in candidates who can teach, in both online and face-to-face formats, a wide range of undergraduate and graduate special education courses (PreK-High School).

Required Qualifications

  • A doctorate in Special Education or a related field
  • Successful record of college teaching
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Commitment to engaging and effectively collaborating with faculty, staff, and students

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience teaching online and face-to-face courses
  • K-12 teaching experience
  • Experience addressing and advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in research, teaching, service, and/or public engagement.
  • Evidence of professional service
